Film finishes sit on the surface and eventually peel and crack. MELDOS works the other way round. It is a natural-resin oil that penetrates deep into the timber and leaves nothing on the surface to fail.

What it is for

Interior use on solid softwoods: cedar, pine, fir and other coniferous species, which is precisely what a sauna is built from. Clear in colour, so it deepens the natural grain and warm tones without changing what the room looks like.

Where not to use it

Not for wooden floors, cabinet interiors, veneers (for example kitchen furniture), hardwoods, or stained or leached softwoods. In areas that take frequent water splashes or high humidity, do not apply a wax treatment over it afterwards.

Applying it

The wood needs to be clean, dry, bare and lightly sanded. Apply 1 to 3 coats depending on how absorbent the timber is, working until the wood is saturated. About 20 to 30 minutes after each coat, spread any oil that has not soaked in onto the areas that are still absorbent, or wipe it off. Sand lightly between coats with 240 grit.

Coverage

Roughly 183 sq ft (17 m2) per litre on the first coat, so a 2.5 L can covers a substantial sauna interior. Absorbency varies by species and surface, so test a small area first.

Safety, and please read this

Cloths and rags that are wet or even slightly damp with this oil can catch fire on their own as the plant oils cure. Seal used cloths in an airtight metal container or soak them in water before disposal.

Complies with DIN 53160 for resistance to perspiration and saliva, and DIN EN 71 Part 3, the European standard for materials used in toys.
