Two things you put on the sauna - scent on the stones, cleaner on the wood. We carry four scent formats: pure essential oils in 4 oz bottles, traditional Nystad birch sachets handmade in Finland, Sauna Menthol crystals for an icy-cool steam, and 1-gallon Club Aroma concentrates for high-volume use. Plus, two sauna-safe cleaners formulated to clean cedar and pine without drying them out. Ships Canada-wide.

Sauna Oils, Essences, & Cleaner

Four formats of scent, for four use cases.

Most of the confusion buyers have on this page is which format to pick. The four formats do different jobs.

Pure 4 oz essential oils are the smallest format. Our 4 oz lavender sauna essence is for relaxation and quieter sessions; the 4 oz eucalyptus sauna essence clears the sinuses and works well in colder months. Both are 120ml bottles. A few drops mixed into the bucket of loyly water - never poured directly onto hot stones - and you have a controlled, potent aromatherapy session. The right call for buyers who sauna once or twice a week.

Nystad birch sachets are the traditional Finnish loyly infusion. Birch leaf, birch and lavender, or birch and peppermint, each in biodegradable sachets that drop into the water like tea bags. Handmade in Finland, package recyclable with paper. The pick if you want the actual Finnish ritual rather than essential-oil aromatherapy.

Sauna Menthol crystals are a different experience entirely. The 25 gram bag of 100% natural mint crystals gets sprinkled directly onto hot stones, creating a sharp, icy-cool steam that contrasts the heat and lasts past the end of the session. Different feel from oil-and-water aromatherapy - more sensation, less perfume.

Club Aroma 1-gallon concentrates are the commercial-volume format. The Club Aroma eucalyptus and Club Aroma lavender get sprayed onto stones or fed through a Nano automatic unit. The right format for spas, gyms, and operators running multiple sessions a day.

If you'd rather have the scent run passively than pour it onto the stones, the aromatherapy oil cup is a stainless-steel bowl on chains with a wooden wall bracket that hangs above the heater. Fill with water and a few drops of essence; the rising heat evaporates the mixture into a slow, continuous fragrance.

Sauna cleaners that don't dry out the wood.

Most generic household cleaners damage cedar and pine - bleach and ammonia strip the wood of natural oils and leave it brittle within a season. The two cleaners on this page are formulated for sauna wood specifically. The Spa Partners sauna wood cleaner is a 1-gallon concentrate, used direct from the bottle for tough cleaning or diluted up to 5:1 for routine upkeep. Natural oils gently clean without drying. The 750ml sauna room cleaner is a ready-to-use spray, direct for deep cleaning or 4:1 dilution for a quick wipe-down between sessions. Both are safe on bare wood surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I safely use sauna essential oils on hot stones?

Mix the oil into your loyly water in the bucket, then pour the diluted mixture over the stones - never pour undiluted oil directly onto hot stones. Pure essential oil is flammable; the water dilution is what makes it safe. The standard guideline is 3 to 5 drops of essential oil per litre of water in the bucket, stirred to disperse, then ladled gradually over the stones throughout the session.

Are Nystad birch sachets safe for people with allergies?

Birch is the obvious flag - if you have a known birch allergy, skip the birch leaf version and the birch and peppermint variant. The birch and lavender sachet still contains birch. For genuinely birch-free aromatherapy, the lavender or eucalyptus 4 oz essential oils, the Sauna Menthol crystals, or the Club Aroma concentrates are all alternatives. None contain birch.

What's the difference between menthol crystals and regular sauna oils?

A different sensation, not a stronger version of the same thing. Sauna oils and Nystad sachets infuse fragrance into the steam - you breathe in scent. Menthol crystals create an actual cooling sensation in the steam itself, opening the airways and producing a perception of coolness on the skin even though the room temperature hasn't dropped. Some buyers use both: oils or sachets for the perfume, menthol crystals for the cool burst. They don't conflict.

Can I use regular household cleaners in my sauna?

No - and especially not bleach, ammonia, or any disinfectant designed for kitchens or bathrooms. Those products strip natural oils from cedar and pine, drying out the wood and leaving it cracked and discoloured within a season. Sauna-specific cleaners use natural oils that lift dirt and sweat residue without damaging the wood underneath.

How often should I clean my sauna?

Wipe down benches and floors after each session if anyone has sweated heavily - that's all the 750ml sauna room cleaner is for. Deep clean every two to three months in a typical home sauna using the Spa Partners sauna wood cleaner at full strength on stained spots. High-traffic and commercial saunas need deep cleaning closer to monthly. Always let the sauna fully dry before the next use.
